In an attempt to track the flight of birds, animals, aircraft and mechanized objects, Guy Hadany isolated a singular moment, reproducing it through complex analog means. His work consists of hundreds of components that have been manually assembled into a miraculous machine, which celebrates the delicacy of movement while remaining stationary. The sculpture invites viewers to approach and study its underlying mechanisms, which form a synchronous, harmonious, mesmerizing whole, connecting with both the internal and external gallery space.
Studies of empathy reveal that when we observe the distress of another human being, our body and mind respond in synchrony with them, reflecting our pro-social motivation. Our body, nervous system and physiological responses adapt to the other. This synchronicity predicts the degree to which we will attempt to help them. The infinite movement of numerous components in Untitled Wing prompts reflection on our social interconnectedness, bringing to mind constantly vibrating strings whose movements impact one another.
Hadany’s kinetic works focus on brief, fragile moments and delicate actions. The replication of these natural movements in what he calls “breathing life machines” expands their temporality, slowing down the speed of seemingly trivial, ephemeral events. Hadany deconstructs the movement, carefully synchronizes its parts, and thus brings together two dimensions: that of visible physical movement, and the internal, meditative occurences that arise in response to it. The delicate connections within the multitude of parts produces a smooth, continuous, natural movement that draws us upwards, like the wings of a living, breathing bird.
