Track of studies towards "Master of Music" (M.Mus.) Without thesis

In performance (orchestral instruments, vocal, keyboard and chamber music) – International program

The course of studies towards M.Mus. without a thesis is two years.

During the period of study the student is to attend classes, workshops and seminars* to be determined by the studies committee as well as participation in musical activities related to the field of specialization.

Students in this track are obliged to participate in all orchestral activities and concerts.

A student who wishes to study in a track or instrument different from his B.Mus. studies has to receive special approval from the studies committee of the school.

Switching programs of study

After the first year the students can decide to switch to another program on condition that he completes all obligations of the track that he wishes to study.
*Every student has to submit 2 seminar papers during his course of studies

Final requirements

Practical examination

Performance (orchestral, vocal, keyboard): Students in these tracks are required to perform in two full-length recitals with different repertoire.

Chamber music: Students in this track are required to perform in three recitals: two recitals - chamber music ensembles; one recital - vocal accompaniment. One recital is to be performed at the end of the 1^st year of studies.

Conducting: Students in this track are required to prepare 6 pieces for the final examination.

Composition: Students in this track are required to submit 5 original pieces for the final examination.

2. A. Oral examination for all courses of studies (excluding composition students)

An Oral examination will take place on the repertoire of final recitals/final examinations that will show proficiency and knowledge of the music material of the following aspects: Harmony, Counterpoint, Structure including background stylistic and historical aspects of the piece, the composer and the genre.

OR

B. A philosophical or analytic paper consisting of 30 pages under the instruction and supervision of a faculty member.

Composition and Conducting Department*

*Currently studies in composition and conducting are held in Hebrew only

Composition:

Required attendance at the weekly department composition meetings (not included in the total annual hours needed to complete the degree).

Submission of 5 original pieces for the final examination:

A piece for solo instrument or for an instrument with piano accompaniment
A choral piece: a cappella or with an ensemble accompaniment (use of electronic means is permitted)
A piece for an ensemble (at least 12 instruments) with or without instrumental or vocal solo
A orchestral piece
A chamber piece for 3-6 instruments

Orchestra and Choir Conducting

- Orchestra conducting students must be present at all orchestra rehearsals.

- Choral conducting students must be present at all the oratorio and chamber choir rehearsals.

- All conducting students are required to prepare 6 different pieces from different eras to be performed with the orchestra/choir or 2 pianos for the final examination which will take place at the end of their studies.
