Chamber Music– Enrollment Guidelines 2022 – 2023

 

Please note the new regulations!

 

 

The chamber courses according to year of study:

 

 

Bachelor's First Year Students:

 

Pianists - Duets for 4 hands / 2 pianos – compulsory course!

 

The course will take place in the second semester only.

Course Requirement: performing a complete composition in the final concert.

The course will be held on a weekly basis (Second semester)

Group instructors and assignments will be provided in advance.

Registration to the course is done by Bidding system only (with the exception of intl students)

 

 

 

String (except Double Bass) - String Quartets by Haydn or Mozart

 

The course will take place on an annual basis.

Course Requirement: performing a complete composition in the final concert.

The weekly course will be held on Tuesdays 4:00PM-6:00PM.

Group instructors and assignments will be provided in advance.

Registration is done through an electronic form (see below)

 

 

 

Bachelor's Second Year Students:

 

Piano and Strings only (except Viola and Double Bass) - Duets (Melodic instrument and piano)

 

The course will take place on an annual basis.

A limited number of woodwind students (in various years of study) will be accepted to the course - as an elective course, according to the department's needs of repertoire and the Head of the Chamber Music Department's approval.

 

Course Requirement: performing at the final concert a complete composition from the standard repertoire.

The course will be held weekly on consistent days and times. In the registration form you will find the optional time frames.

Group instructors and assignments will be provided in advance.

The course will be held on a weekly basis in a certain day and time. In the registration form you are being asked to choose in which time frames you are available.

2nd year Viola students will play in groups of Quartets and larger ensembles together with the 3rd, 4th and Master’s group of students, and therefore have to file the online form of 3rd, 4th and Master’s.

 

The repertoire will not overlap participants' solo repertoire, and will not be played at the end of year examinations.

 

Bachelor's Third and Fourth Year and Graduate Students:

 

Admission to the chamber music course in years 3 and 4 of the first degree, in the second degree and in artist diploma studies is with the approval of the studies committee of the School of Music and in accordance with the chamber music regulations.

Instructions for Pianists and String players:

 

Criteria for participation:

 

Participation in the course will be open only to students who have proven the following in their first and second year:

 

A) Seriousness and perseverance in the ensemble work (including individual part preparation);

B) A high level of individual and ensemble performance in concerts, examinations and the mid-year auditions.

C) Recommendation by ensemble's instructor and the Head of the Chamber Music Department.

 

Students who did not meet all the above criteria:

  • The teaching committee will determine, at the end of the students' second year of studies, which students are eligible for chamber music.  Students not approved for chamber music will be required to take 3rd year elective courses to fulfill the necessary credits.
  • Graduate Students - Eligibility to continue their participation in the chamber music course will be determined by the Studies Committee at the end of the first year of studies.

 

Cancellation of active ensembles:

Ensembles that will not demonstrate an appropriate level of playing and commitment during the school year, will be suspended at the decision of their instructor and the head of the Chamber Music Department. All members of a discontinued ensemble will not receive chamber music credits.

 

Assignment and activity:

 

The course will be held on a weekly basis in a certain day and time. In the registration form you are being asked to choose in which time frames you are available.

 

Students will be assigned by the Head of the Chamber Music Department in consultation with the relevant department heads (Piano/Strings/Wind), based on their achievements in previous chamber courses and their main instrument's examination results. 

       

Students may submit assignment requests for consideration by the Head of the Chamber Music Department. Requests for more than one ensemble will be denied.

 

List of eligible participants for the course will be published in the summer.

The chamber music work will begin at the first week of school!

 

Course Completion Requirement:

A minimum of one major piece performed in a chamber music concert/competition/exam.

 

 

 

 

General instructions for all Chamber Music Courses:

 

Woodwind, Brass, Harp, Percussion and Voice

 

Students may choose chamber music as an elective course, subject to the recommendation of their personal teacher and the approval of the Head of the Chamber Music Department, in accordance with the availability of appropriate instructors.

Singers will be accepted only in their third and fourth year, subject to the approval of the Head of the Chamber Music Department.

Wind students - The chamber music activity of the wind department takes place primarily in the wind workshops. Participation in a chamber music ensemble will be considered as an elective course.

Harpists are required to take two years of Chamber Music during their Bachelor’s degree.

 

Master student and Artist Diploma students in all instruments are required to take two years of Chamber Music.

Each ensemble member must complete the form even if they are not registered for credit for the course.

 

Incomplete Registration form will NOT be accepted.

 

Students will be enrolled in the course in the university's system shortly after being assigned to an ensemble.

 

Instructor preferences

Students may request up to three chamber coaches in order of preference in the registration form.

* We will make every effort to assign ensembles based on preference but it is not guaranteed.

 

Working Format

 

A minimum of 13 coached lessons and a weekly independent rehearsal is required.

 

Ensembles are requested to set a fixed weekly rehearsal and inform the Ensemble Manager – Andy Feldbau.

 

Ensembles that do not set a weekly rehearsal time will not be able to register for the course.

 

Attendance

Ensembles which will not complete the required number of lessons will not receive academic credits for the course:

A minimum of 6 lessons before the mid-year auditions

A minimum of 13 lessons before the end of year concerts/competition/exam.

 

Course requirements :

 

 

The ensemble will be required to study at least one multi movement work in its entirety and perform it in full at one of the chamber music concerts (alternatively in a competition or an end-of-year exam)

 

In first semester: A group that does not perform a minimum of lessons by the date of the audition -  their participation in the course will be canceled .         

 

throughout the year A group that by the end of the year doesn’t perform  a minimum of 13 lessons will not receive credit for the course.        

 

Mid-year auditions : at the end of the first semester auditions will be held all groups on two movements of the repertoire or according to individual requirements to be sent in advance .

 

Groups that successfully pass the audition will be allowed to continue completing the course .

Audition score will be a part of the final score of the course.

 

Requirements end of second semester Each group has to perform at one of the chamber music concerts in school.

 

Participation in the competition chamber music will be considered as a performance.

 

In exceptional cases and subject to the decision of the head of the department, date will be set for a final exam at the end of the second semester as a substitute for the concert competition .

 

Conditions for participation in a concert exam competition meeting the required number of lessons .

 

Groups whose activity was suspended due to non-compliance with the above or failure at the mid-year auditions will not receive credit for the course .

 

Grades

 

Final grades will include:

33.3% - mid-year audition grade.

33.3% - Level of preparedness, both of the individual members and of the ensemble as a whole, attendance in lessons and rehearsals.

33.3% - Level of performance in the final concert/competition/exam.

 

 

 

 

 

Competition Regulations

 

Only fully registered trio groups and above are allowed to register to the chamber music competition.  Registration for the competition is made with the approval of the head of the department .

 

Those who are not allowed to register to the competition :

 

1 -  A trio containing one student who won the first prize in this competition during his studies .

2 -  Quartet quintet with two students who won the first prize in this competition during their studies .

3 -  Six and a larger groups with three students who won first prize in this competition during their studies .

4 -  The ensembles participating in the String Course of the Haydn or Mozart .
