Program Overview:
The Musicology PhD program at the Buchman-Mehta School of Music (BMSM), Tel Aviv University, is designed for international students who seek to conduct in-depth research within the fields of musicology, theory, and ethnomusicology. As part of the BMSM international program, the PhD in Musicology includes a diverse team of researchers, an emphasis on practical research, creative expression, theoretical thinking, and access to extensive collections in the Grinstein Music Library, the Center for Israeli Music, and the ANU Museum. Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on the comprehensive integration of historical, cultural, and theoretical frameworks, providing students with essential skills and methodologies needed to cultivate their unique research interests. By exploring diverse perspectives and analytical approaches, students gain a nuanced understanding of musical practices and their contexts. Students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to engage in practical research within the vibrant musical communities of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Tel Aviv’s indie and alternative music scenes, and the diverse Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities in these urban areas. As part of BMSM, students can participate in various performance opportunities with the BMSM’s Choir, study computer-assisted composition, and join a range of practice-based workshops. With a strong emphasis on comprehensive and socially engaged education, our graduates have successfully secured competitive positions in music schools and cultural institutions, and they lead innovative projects in Israel and abroad.
