Track of studies towards "Master of Arts" in Musicology (M.A) with thesis
The MA in Musicology program at the Samuel Rubin Musicology Program at the Buchman-Mehta School of Music (BMSM), Tel Aviv University combines musicology, theory, and ethnomusicology, and is designed specifically for international students. As part of the BMSM international program, the MA in Musicology includes a diverse team of researchers, an emphasis on practical research, creative expression, theoretical thinking, and access to extensive collections in the Grinstein Music Library, the Center for Israeli Music, and the ANU Museum.
The program currently features two experts in historical musicology (Prof. Michal Grover Friedlander and Prof. Dorit Tanay), an expert in music theory (Dr. Uri Rom), and ethno/musicologist specializing in Jewish music and popular music (Dr. Jonathan Turgeman), covering a wide array of topics from contemporary opera to Israeli song, and from music as natural science to the statistical properties of Mozart's concertos.
Students in the program will have the opportunity for practical research among the diverse musical communities of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Tel Aviv’s indie and alternative music scenes, and the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities in the urban areas of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Being part of a music school affords students the possibility to participate in various performance opportunities with the Buchman-Mehta School Choir, study computer-assisted composition, and join other practice-based workshops. Thanks to the emphasis on comprehensive and socially involved education, our graduates have successfully integrated into competitive jobs in various music schools, cultural institutions, and lead creative projects in Israel and abroad. With its world-class faculty and proximity to Israel’s most musical city, the MA program in Musicology at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University equips you with the keys to succeed in a changing musical world.
