Strings Requirements

End of Year and Final Exams - Undergraduate

*It is not allowed to repeat repertoire from previous exams (including the entry audition), including different movements from the same piece! In special cases, contact the head of the department.

 1st and 2nd  year – all instruments except Double Bass

1.         Prelude and dance or two movements from a Suite, Partita, solo Sonata or
             Sonata da gamba by Bach or two movements from a parallel Baroque piece
             (depending on the instrument)

2.         Movement from a standard concerto

3.         Short work or a movement from a major work, stylistically different from those performed already.

3rd  year – all instruments except Double Bass

1.         Prelude and two dances or three dances from a Suite or Partita by Bach or
             three movements from a Baroque Sonata of parallel difficulty (depending on
             the instrument)

2.         Two movements from a concerto

3.         Short work or movement from major work stylistically different from those performed already.

4th year (final exam) - all instruments except Double Bass

Violin

1.   Bach – Any of the Adagio and Fugue/Grave and Fugue, or Chaconne, or four movements from any of the Partitas/Sonatas for violin solo

2.   Violin concerto in its entirety

3.   Entire Sonata stylistically different from the concerto

4.   Paganini – one caprice or any other virtuoso work

5.   An Israeli work
       Foreign candidates for graduate studies should prepare a contemporary piece
       instead of an Israeli piece

Viola

1.  Bach – Suite in its entirety, or Sonata for viola da gamba

2.  Concerto in its entirety such as Bartok, Walton or one of equivalent difficulty

3.   Entire Sonata stylistically different from the concerto

4.   Contemporary work or virtuosic piece

5.   An Israeli work
       Foreign candidates for graduate studies, instead of an Israeli work should prepare
       either a virtuoso or a contemporary piece, different in genre from the one chosen
       in clause 4 accordingly.

Violoncello

1.  Bach – Suite in its entirety, or Gamba Sonata or a Baroque virtuoso work (Valentini Sonata, Boccherini Sonata, Locatelli or Francoeur)

2.   A concerto in its entirety

3.   Entire Sonata stylistically different from the concerto and the Baroque sonata

4.   A contemporary work or virtuoso work (optional Piatti Capriccio)

5.   An Israeli work
       Foreign candidates for graduate studies, instead of an Israeli work should prepare
       either a virtuoso or a contemporary piece, different in genre from the one chosen
       in clause 4 accordingly

 

Double Bass Requirements:

 

1st Year

1. Etude/ movement from a concerto or sonata/ full short piece

2. A slow and a fast movement from a baroque suite or sonata

 

2nd Year

1. Etude/ movement from a concerto or sonata/ full short piece

2. A slow and a fast movement from a baroque suite or sonata

3. The first movement from a classical concerto (to be played by memory)

4. One orchestral excerpt

 

3rd Year

1. At least one movement from a romantic concerto (to be played by memory) or a romantic sonata

2. A contemporary piece

3. A movement or a full piece of your choice from the classical or baroque era

(In case a concerto was not chosen in the above clause 1. The student must play another piece of the program by memory)

4. Three orchestral excerpts

 

4th Year

1. A full baroque piece

2. A full romantic concerto (to be played by memory) or a full romantic sonata (optional same piece from 3rd year)

3. A contemporary piece

4. A piece of your choice or orchestral excerpts in case the program does not reach a duration of 30 minutes

(In case a concerto was not chosen in the above clause 2., the student must play another piece of the program by memory)

 

Recitals repertoire for Artist diploma or Master of Music (M.Mus) without a thesis:

Two 60-minute recitals. Both recitals must include at least 3 full pieces of different styles and eras.  One of the recitals must include a concerto (to be played by memory) and a contemporary piece.
